Wilco, Lowell, MA, July 11, 2009
I'll do a link-dump here later on. WERS is doing a big content overhaul soon, which means a quicker turnaround, which means more of my stuff will be posted faster. Coming up: More Wilco, Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band, Bowerbirds, Camera Obscura, and Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears.
Hope everyone's well.

Also, I just found my shots from when Easy Star All-Stars were playing a live mix session at WERS, so here they are.
Actually, I'm sitting in the newsroom at WERS right now waiting for Deertick to arrive so I can shoot a similar setup. A friend of mine is actually joining the band in a short while, so I'm gonna be shameless and try to drop a few names in exchange for creds for their show at the House of Blues tonight.
Also, that "WERS presents Camera Obscura" thing on the front page is the show I'm shooting at the Somerville Theater at the end of the month. Stay tuned.

So I just heard from my collaborator Andrew that his review/my photos of the Easy Star All-Stars show at the Middle East last month is up at Jambase.com. You should probably check 'em out.

Well, my Easy Star photos are sort of MIA at Jambase right now, so until those are up, I'm going to forget about the fact that I didn't end up shooting Nine Inch Nails/Jane's Addiction and TV On The Radio this week because I'm back in DC for a very short while and present you with some selections from a final analog portfolio I worked on a while back. All of these are shot in 35mm Kodak Tri-X 400 on a Canon A-1 and were printed on 11"x14" multigrade fiber-based paper. ( Check it - five behind the cut. )

... when I lost track of updating this bad boy for two years because my life went crazy?
Updates, then cutting to the chase: - Shot my first shows that I needed passes to get into. - Spent a while bumming around Europe. - Became photo editor, then management, then management/graphics editor of The Berkeley Beacon. - Declared a photography minor and got back in the darkroom. - Moved to Boston full-time. - Got a job in the photo department at The Boston Globe. - Got set up with a sweet gig shooting shows at the new House of Blues in Boston for various online magazines.
Over the next bit of time, I'm going to be playing catchup for the last two years, because it's summer, I don't start at the Globe until June 29th, and for the first time since I last updated this thing, I'm free of responsibility for the foreseeable future. Tell your friends. Tell your mom. Tell your dog. I'm keeping myself busy again.
First post? Sort of a copout, but I just shot Mastodon at the House of Blues for a Glide Magazine column called Hidden Track, and they've got my gallery up, so go check it out while I arrange whatever else I'm going to post here.

Remember that time sometime a little over a month ago when I said I was being punctual? I lied. Again.
HOWEVER! I've just gone through the last month or so of photos, and I'm going to take the next few days to organize and put it all up here. Probably going to spread things out over a few updates, but what it amounts to is a whole crapload of Fort Reno shows, and possibly a few photos from Warped Tour, which I got press credentials for this year. If I don't put those up here, they'll be on fusicmedia.com sometime within the next few weeks, depending on how slow the USPS feels like being. (It's a complicated situation. We'll see how that goes.)
I guess I'll start things off here. First of many updates. ( Joe Lally, The Evens, Sonic Survivor, Five Four, The Max Levine Ensemble, Kitty Hawk, Statehood, Greenland. )

Hey, look at this, I'm updating punctually. This brief installment of Fort Reno photos covers a rainy Thursday night featuring The Mirror Script and The Hard Tomorrows. I missed Let's French, but there will be more weeks. Also, The Hard Tomorrows gave me a copy of their CD. I was excited.
In other news, I've set up an RSS feed for this blog thing so anyone who reads this and doesn't have a friends page to look at can know when I update. If you're not down with RSS, I suggest you look it up -- it's quite handy, and you can talk about it in addition to wiki and other sorts of things and sound all Web 2.0-savvy and hip and stuff.
Okay. ( Without further ado: )

Alright. Got my computer back, and basically the situation was that I had to re-arrange all my photo archives from last semester, and rather than deal with that right now, I'm getting on to more current and important things. Fort Reno started tonight, and I felt the need to throw an update in here. I'll put some of the older stuff up later, from sports, protests, more concerts, other such things. Exciting stuff, I assure you.
Alright, so without further ado, ( Boom Orangutangs, Deleted Scenes and Mass Movement of the Moth kicking off Fort Reno. )

The Killers - Mr. Brightside (Jacques Lu Cont's Thin White Duke remix) |
] |
Remember that time back in February when I said there'd be stuff up here soon? Yeah, right around that time, things got hectic. Newspaper work took over life, bands took over other aspects of life, and right around that time, my iBook decided to nearly kill itself, Logicboard and hard drive wise.
The bottom line, then, is that I get my computer back in a few days, at which time I'll throw up a second-semester retrospective, outline summer photo plans, and do other cool things until Fort Reno starts up in a month, and I have a more constant source of subject material. No word on lineups yet, but I'll keep you all posted.
Hope people out there are still paying attention to this, and I wish you all a pleasant Saturday.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - I Could Have Lied |

Well, I'm back in Boston, and this is my effort to make sure I update this thing with some degree of regularity. Not much has changed since the last update, except for the fact that my usually-trusty 4GB card suddenly crapped out on me out of nowhere, so I'm borrowing cards from whoever has spares until I figure out what to do about this situation. I'm this close to setting up a donation fund thing and begging people, but I don't feel like dealing with Paypal or whatever, so that'll have to wait for now. There is some good stuff going on, though -- getting a lot of mileage out of the new lens (turns out it's perfect for basketball and indoor sports things), doing a lot more work for the assistant gig (I found out I keep the position next year even after I get back from the Netherlands), getting photo requests from bands, and my editor tells me she's going to try to snag photo passes for one of the Decemberists shows at the Avalon in March. Stay tuned.
Anyway, here's the situation: I've got a crapload of random music stuff and news stuff and all sorts of stuff to go through right now, mostly putting together packages for bands and stuff, but I figured I'd throw something up here to keep you all intersted or whatever, so here you go.
( Further forays into portraiture of a variety of sorts. Five photos behind the cut. )

Well. Shit. That was altogether too long to go in between entries. Someone, next time I decide to subject myself to going through a semester's worth of pictures, slap me. I'm doing enough work with the camera that this could be at least a monthly thing, but let's face it, I'm lazy.
Okay, though, stuff that's happened since my last update. I got the assistant photo editor job at the Berkeley Beacon, and it's probably the single most legit thing I could be doing. Doing all kinds of photography that I wouldn't get to do otherwise, getting press passes for things, and my editor says that she's going to take me to cover a show in Boston sometime soon. All in all, things are looking pretty solid.
Also, I'm working with a new lens of late. Wider apertures and such, which means more fun in lower light, as well as more fun with focus, as well as more fun with portraits (as I'll get to in a second or so).
Nothing more I can think of to say here. ( Let's get to it. )

Dispatch - Here We Go |
] |
It's just less than a month since I've put anything here. It's been crazy times, what with classes, life, the T, piracy, Boston, you name it. News items first, though. I didn't get that WERS job I had posted about, which makes me a bit sad, but I'm in the process of applying to be assistant photo editor for the Berkeley Beacon (the Emerson College newspaper), and going to meetings of Developed Images (the Emerson photography publication), and the actual photo editor for the Beacon tells me it's really easy to get involved with other music photography in Boston, so it's all good.
Anyway. I've only photographed one show since I've been here (since Man Man lend themselves more to dancing than photography, especially when playing a show in the basement of a dorm at Tufts and there's not even room to breathe), so there's some other stuff thrown in, but without further ado...

It's been all of August since I've posted, but that's alright. A few things before the photos:
- I'm putting together that application for the WERS position. This prospect excites me like little else.
- If you're in a band whose show I've been to, and you've contacted me about photos, I'm in the process of getting everything narrowed down and taking out all the ridiculously-blurry shots and things like that. Don't worry, you'll have your stuff soon.
Alright. That stuff said, let's get to it. ( The better part of August, the last of the Fort Reno shows, and some arty stuff. )

Again, it's been a little while, but I think I can handle this update (lack-of-) schedule. I actually filled my 4GB card in between updates this time, so there's a bunch of stuff here. ( Eyeball Skeleton, Statehood, Head Roc, Mas Y Mas, The Aquarium, DCIC & The Evens. ) In other Steve-related photography news, WERS (the Emerson College FM radio station, currently the largest public radio operation in the Northeast) is looking for photographers. I figure I'll see what's up with that.

So I got lazy, and hadn't emptied my memory since the last night at the beach, and since a lot has happened between now and then, most of it not photographed, I figured it's about time I threw something up in here. I swear, one of these days I'll get back to regular updates, but until then, this is how it is. Spastic.

That's all for now. Have a most excellent weekend.
